Winter SkincareWinter has arrived!

I feel like someone has just flicked a switch and we’ve landed in the middle of winter. I may be slightly dramatic, but I don’t do well in the cold. My circulation gets worse, and this leads to cold hands, feet, and legs. I walk around like the Michelin Man in as many layers as I can physically muster and basically go into hibernation mode.

However, before I do so, I’ve got the whole of the Christmas season to prep for, many a craft fair and I have to tell you about my skincare routine in the winter. Winter skincare is something I’ve only adopted over the last few years. I like to keep things simple and therefore it isn’t surprising to learn it is not extensive, so keep reading.

WINTER SKINCARE

DRY ITCHY SKIN

I’m not alone when I speak to friends, family, and my lovely customers, as many of them also suffer with dry itchy skin during winter. However, literally overnight my skin can start to look like this especially on my legs…

The reason that your skin changes during the winter months is it ultimately gets drier. This is due to the lack of humidity in the air, the constant change in temperature from the cold outdoors to the heating indoors, dry air from the heating, and a reduction in overall moisture. Dehydrating the skin completely and layering up in clothes means it also doesn’t get any air.

INCREASE IN GENERAL SKIN COMPLAINTS

I’ve also spoken to people recently at the craft fairs I’ve attending and there seems to be an increase in the number of general skin complaints. People who suffer with eczema, psoriasis, sensitive skin and have allergies. All of these skin conditions can be exacerbated within the winter as well.

REDUCE THE ITCH

I’ve used a variety of lotions and potions over the years to try and reduce the itch. But ultimately it was to late, I hadn’t done anything to prevent the irritation from occurring. What I’ve learnt is to start when the seasons change, as soon as the weather gets colder crack out the lip balm and my winter skincare to prevent it from becoming a problem.

That’s why is you want legs like this ……..

Make sure you read next weeks blog on my top tips to winter skincare and how you can prevent your skin from becoming dry and damaged this year.

Have fun swapping your summer wardrobe for your winter wardrobe and don’t forget I’ll be back next Tuesday for more weekly sustainable skincare tips.
